—William Carlos Williams, The Red Wheel Barrow
Based on William Carlos Williams’ haunting poem The Red Wheel Barrow, SO MUCH DEPENDS UPON [a red wheel barrow] was a daily performance project that put contemporary social debates into a new perspective—with the help of a wheelbarrow. Each day, Burkle and his team of performers would construct new performances tackling issues from the economy to television, H1N1 to caffeine. Passers-by of the Times Square storefront were charmed and bewildered by the juxtaposition of Williams’ poem with some of the most pressing issues in today’s headlines. The project also developed a following around the world as many viewed what the installation unfolded on its companion website, followthewheelbarrow.com, with video, pictures, and daily commentary.
