about art.party.theater.company
art.party.theater.company makes bold performances for an audacious audience. Founded in 2008 by Mary Birnbaum (Artistic Director), art.party is now in season.three. In February 2009, art.party's SCHOOLED: or m. moliere's the learned ladies, directed by Mary, had audiences following the play through salons of New York City apartments. Mary and Jess Burkle (Artistic Producer) co-conceived Bryant in the Park which featured the fictional Bryant Park Croquet Society playing on the Bryant Park lawn while spouting the poetry of William Cullen Bryant. In October 2009, Burkle headed art.party's residence at chashama's Times Square location, presenting the daily performance installation so much depends upon [a red wheel barrow], while Mary directed the co-conceived Duchess in the Dark, plunging audiences into a pitch-black re-telling of Webster's The Duchess of Malfi armed with flashlights. Season two saw art.party join forces with American Opera Projects in Brooklyn to present BAD ROMANCE, two Schumann song cycles in the format of couples therapy session in February 2010. In Summer 2010, art.party presented STARBOX, a performance installation in Bryant Park about hype and humanity lauded as "genius" by Encore Magazine. In addition, art.party has premiered pieces by Erica Lipez (Bully to You, Sept 2009), Mattie Brickman and a mixtape folk musical conceived by Jeremy Bloom (Drama League Director's Fest, Spoken La Boheme) based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Littlest Mermaid called Live Mermaids Live: Last Call at the Sand Bar. Most recently, art.party created a performance piece for New York Foundation "Sing For Hope" called Of All The Pianos In All The World... based on a fictional lounge duo, Loreleen and Chaz. This piece then went on to be part of The New Museum's "Art and Ideas Festival" in May 2011.
